The Nuts and Bolts of Music Copyrights

A Guide to Navigating Copyright Issues

Music ministries around the country deal with copyrighted music regularly, whether it is a choir special or even a song from the hymnal. In any case, copyright management is necessary for the ministry to operate legally. This procedure can sometimes be confusing. For this reason, the Music Department of West Coast Baptist College has developed a copyright tutorial entitled “The Nuts and Bolts of Music Copyrights.” This tutorial can be downloaded here.

In this tutorial, we will answer questions like:

  1. What is intellectual property?
  2. What is copyright?
  3. What does copyright mean to me?
  4. How do I find my song?
  5. How do I obtain a license?

Also in this tutorial, there is specific information about how to navigate many of the websites associated with copyright permissions. If you have additional questions about copyright management, feel free to contact me at john.tyler@wcbc.edu.
