The wise preacher is a soulwinning preacher. High atop the list of priorities, along with prayer and Bible time, should be reaching people for Christ. Nothing will keep the heart tender like feeling the burdens and seeing the emptiness of people who are not saved.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.—Matthew 28:19–20
The purpose of the church is to win the lost. That is why Matthew 28:19–20 is called “The Great Commission.” A wise preacher will spend time every week of his life endeavoring to lead people to Christ.
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.—Proverbs 11:30
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.—Daniel 12:3
Many little things will rob your time for witnessing if you do not guard it. Soulwinning time must be scheduled. Everything else in God’s service will fail if this is neglected. Schedule time every week to do nothing but door to door soulwinning and visiting hot prospects who are not saved. During the week be watching for prime opportunities to talk about the Lord. This should be the heartbeat of every full-time Christian worker.
Dr. John R. Rice was in a church service where Gypsy Smith challenged those in attendance to win souls. Dr. Rice responded by telling God he would witness to the first person he could after the service. He stopped a cab driver and asked him if he were a Christian. The driver replied, “Yes, Gypsy Smith just led me to Christ.” Thank God for preachers who practice what they preach!
There are certain things you can do to motivate yourself to go soulwinning. Many preachers love soulwinning once they get going; it is just the getting started that is tough. One thing that aids in soulwinning is having a definite time to go. A preacher also needs to prepare his heart by meditation before he goes. Meditating on these three things will motivate Christians to win souls:
- The Great Commission—Realize we are commanded to give the gospel to every creature. Pause to think of all those without Christ.
- Hell—Think about the torments of Hell and how hopeless it will be for people who die without Christ.
- Calvary—Think of what Jesus suffered on the cross for every sinner. He is willing to save them if someone will tell them about His love.
Having converts in your service ready to make a public profession will greatly encourage you when you preach. Remember, there is no easy road to being a soulwinner, that is why so many preachers are not soulwinners.
