The Word of God states, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance” (Psalm 33:12). We must not forget that God is the sustaining power of our republic.
We, at Awake America, feel the responsibility of educating, engaging, and encouraging the independent Baptist churches of America to stand for Christ in these times of a changing nation. We find the main spiritual fibers that have held our society together since the beginning of our nation are being torn away by a spiritual case of amnesia.
The Word of God shares in the book of Nahum about a nation who forgot God and faced imminent judgment from His hand. This nation was the great city of Nineveh. Her inhabitants were protected by 100-foot walls, over 200 towers, and moats that were 150 feet wide and 60 feet deep.
One hundred and fifty years before its destruction, Jonah preached an eight-word sermon, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.” Repentance, sack-cloth, and ashes brought the mercy of God on this wicked nation. During her next 150 years of peace and prosperity, Nineveh forgot God was her sustaining power bringing the overflowing flood of God’s judgment. The inhabitants of the city came to the place where they were secure in their own strength and lived as if nothing could happen to them.
History reveals the Tigris River overflowed its banks, and Nineveh’s walls were penetrated revealing an entrance for the Babylonian armies to enter and to defeat these lethargic people. Nahum prophesied that Nineveh would be hidden (Nahum 3:11). God kept His Word by destroying any evidence of her existence after her destruction until over 2000 years later in the 1800s when she was unearthed.
History is a great teacher; may we, as Americans, learn from Nineveh’s mistakes. Awake America believes God’s door of mercy is still open for our blessed nation. Pastors and their churches must become engaged in standing for Christ in their city, in their state, and in our nation’s capital.
We are often asked this question: “How can we accomplish this task?” You can begin by praying for your legislative representatives by name; first, for their salvation and then, for wisdom in their decision making. If possible, make a personal visit to their offices and let them know you are praying for them by name. A personalized New Testament is a wonderful, well-received gift.
Invite them to your church and honor them for their service to our country. Challenge every church member to vote in elections, and encourage them to vote for biblical values. Some may need guidance in voter’s registration, so direct them to appropriate sources.
You can educate your church membership on current legislative issues being considered at state and federal levels. Provide contact numbers of legislative leaders so your membership can share their stand on issues at hand in a Christ-like manner. You can make a difference one step at a time.
Can you imagine the impact of even a small percentage of the 2.1 million independent Baptist churches getting educated and engaged in ensuring our nation’s liberty and freedom of worship?
In the book of Nehemiah, one man’s concern for the walls of Jerusalem brought about the completion of those walls in fifty-two days, and a testimony of God’s power was revealed. America’s walls of freedom need to be fortified. Will you accept the challenge?
