You’ve heard the quote: “God is more concerned with our character than our comfort.”
It’s a true statement, but it’s not the whole story.
God’s concern with our comfort depends on what kind of comfort we are talking about.
Do we mean that it is His job description to provide us with a comfortable, trouble-free life? No. That is impossible in a sin-cursed world; and frankly, it wouldn’t contribute to our Christian growth.
But do we mean that He wants us to know spiritual and emotional comfort through the difficulties we face? Absolutely!
God doesn’t promise to make our lives comfortable, but neither does He desire for us to be miserable. In the midst of our pain, He desires to bring His comfort, wrapping us in His grace.
He Is the God of All Comfort:
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort—2 Corinthians 1:3
He Comforts Us So We May Comfort Others:
Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.—2 Corinthians 1:4
He Is Mindful of Us:
The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us…—Psalm 115:12
He Considers Our Troubles and Knows Our Soul in Adversity:
I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;—Psalm 31:7
He, Himself, Is the Comforter:
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever—John 14:16
I would say that God cares deeply about our comfort. And He longs to give it freely to aching, troubled hearts.
Are you in pain? Go to the God of all comfort. He cares for you.
