Blueprint for Adult Classes

The Ingredients for a Tremendous Class

The book of Acts provides us with a clear blueprint for reaching and discipling adults. If we will lead our classes to grow in health and attendance, we must:

Grow Spiritually

Growing leaders lead growing classes. Consider your Bible reading, prayer life, and personal walk with God. Everyone noticed that Peter and John “had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).

Witness Faithfully

The primary reason for each class is to reach people for Christ. We are surrounded by people who are open to the Gospel. The early Christians “filled Jerusalem” with their doctrine (Acts 5:28).

Enroll Constantly

Enrollment is a step toward ownership in the larger body. Build a roster with people you will invest in, pray for, contact, and involve. The first century church constantly added to their number (Acts 2:41, 47; 6:1; 16:5).

Bond Closely

When mature believers exercise hospitality, it acts as cement and accelerates the discipleship of new Christians. A spirit of camaraderie existed among the new congregation in Jerusalem (Acts 2:44–47).

Act Thoughtfully

Thoughtful Christians stand in contrast to our self-centered culture. Have you offered a good word, demonstrated an act of kindness, or jotted a note of encouragement recently? Barnabas is a wonderful example to us all (Acts 4:36; 11:23–24).

Pray Consistently

When we work, we work. But when we pray, God works. As I visit prospects and prepare lessons, I must not forget to pray. The Apostles gave themselves to prayer, and their number multiplied (Acts 6:4,7).

If you intend to build lives through the ministry of an adult Bible class, I recommend that these values become your plan for the days ahead!
