Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.—Psalm 40:5
Do you have a heart that is overflowing in praise and thankfulness to God? Do you have a praise list that is equal to your prayer list? Are you careful to take inventory all of the good things God is doing for you? The Psalmist made a powerful statement concerning the goodness of God. In essence, He said that all the things God has done for him are more than can be numbered.
There Is His Attitude
The attitude of the psalmist was one of complete praise and thankfulness. He is thanking the Lord for the gift and benefits of salvation. He thought of his terrible past and how the Lord took him out of a place of hopelessness to a place of security and stability. If we are not careful, our attitude is shaped by our surroundings and a spirit of entitlement. We can selfishly arrive at the place where we think we deserve a lot more than we really do. We must strive to have an attitude that says, “God is better to us than we deserve.”
There Is His Assessment
He remembered the many works of the Lord and realized they were innumerable. He was meditating upon everything God had done for him. He was overwhelmed at the very smallest detail that God was concerned about for him. He came to the conclusion that God does more for him than he will ever do for God. Someone has said that we can never out-give the Lord. He realized that the thoughts of God toward him could not be reckoned in order. Are you at a place in life where you realize that God is more concerned about you than you are concerned about you? Can you take inventory of everything that God has and is doing for you?
There Is His Appreciation
He was appreciative of being saved, of being a recipient of God’s grace, and of the complete security he had in the Lord, He was thankful! He was thankful for the trials he was going through. He was thankful for the way God was working every day in his life. He was saying, “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!”
There Is the Application
Today would be a good time for each of us to assess all the goodness of God in our lives. We need to realize, “Many are God’s wonderful works for us.”
He was thankful God gave him purpose, a pathway, a power, and priority. His life was never more complete than when he, by faith, received the Lord as his Saviour. Going forward, he gave careful attention to thank the Lord for His goodness in his life. Just as God gives attention to the smallest details of our life, we should give attention to everything God is doing in our life.
Can you say, many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done? Why not take time today to count your blessings and name them one by one.
