The theme for our church this year is “Walk Worthy.” It’s a powerful reminder to live intentionally and actionably for the Lord. Recently, I’ve reflected on this theme from the perspective of ministry leadership.
As leaders, we guide others in their walk with Christ. Yet, it’s crucial to remember the call to live a life worthy of the Lord ourselves. The Apostle Paul’s words in Colossians 1 provide a profound framework for a life that glorifies and pleases God.
1. Pursue Pleasing Jesus in Everything
"…That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing." — Colossians 1:10
Daily, we must prioritize pleasing Jesus above all else. Just as a branch grafted into a vine bears fruit, our lives should reflect the fruit of the Spirit (John 15:5).
Ask yourself: Does this decision, action, or word please God? Let this filter guide your choices and priorities. It’s easy to seek approval from others, but our ultimate focus must remain on pleasing the One who matters most.
2. Prioritize Your Own Spiritual Growth
"…being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God." — Colossians 1:10
Ministry demands are endless, often leaving little time for personal spiritual growth. But to lead others effectively, we must first be led by God.
Dedicate daily time to prayer and Scripture, allowing the Word to refresh and nourish your soul. Take opportunities to attend conferences and retreats that rejuvenate your spirit, giving you fresh perspective and strength. Surround yourself with mentors and accountability partners who challenge and encourage you to become more Christlike. When we make spiritual growth a priority, we become better equipped to serve, and our families and churches are deeply enriched by the overflow of our faith.
3. Persevere with Joy
"…Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness." — Colossians 1:11
Ministry is a battleground, not a walk in the park. Challenges will come: trials, disappointments, verbal attacks, emotional exhaustion, and spiritual warfare. However, we are not called to face these battles in our own strength. God’s mighty power equips us with the endurance, patience, and joy we need to persevere.
When ministry feels overwhelming, fix your eyes on Jesus, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). His example inspires us to press on joyfully, knowing that even in hardship, God is at work. Joyful perseverance doesn’t come from ignoring difficulties but from drawing strength from the One who sustains us.
4. Praise God Continually for His Saving Work
"…Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light."— Colossians 1:12
Never lose sight of God’s incredible rescue mission in your life. He delivered us from the darkness of sin and transferred us into the Kingdom of His beloved Son. Through Christ’s blood, we are redeemed and forgiven. These truths remind us of our identity as God’s children, chosen and cherished.
When ministry feels overwhelming, turn your heart to gratitude. Praise God for His unmerited favor, His faithfulness, and the privilege of serving Him. A heart of thankfulness keeps us grounded in the joy of salvation and motivated to continue walking worthy of the Lord.
Look to Christ as Your Ultimate Model
As ministry leaders, others look to us for guidance. But we must first look to Christ as our source and example. Pursue Him passionately, making Him the center of all that you do. Grow in Him consistently, allowing His Word and Spirit to shape your character and decisions. Persevere joyfully, drawing on His strength in the face of trials. And praise Him continually, giving thanks for His grace and faithfulness in every season.
In doing so, He will transform us into His likeness, equipping us to lead with integrity, humility, and love.
The Reward of Walking Worthy
The journey of walking worthy isn’t easy, but it is worth it. Years from now, the numbers and accolades will fade. What remains is this: knowing Jesus and walking worthy of Him.
May this be the unshakeable foundation of our life and ministry.
