Preaching

Several times I’ve been privileged to hear a number of great preachers in churches as they travel across the country. I’ve noticed something that they do.

We have no right to dilute, delete, diminish, or dummy-down anything that God said in His Word. We are to declare it exactly the way He said it.

I am convinced that the highest, holiest, and hardest calling for the man of God is to preach the Word of God.

My dad finished preaching a service in a revival meeting one night and was “complimented” by a dear older lady. “Brother Ouellette, that was a good sermon,” she said. “There wasn’t no doctrine or nothin’ in it.”

Diet books and weight loss plans abound in the land of plenty. More than half of the population is looking for a quick fix on how to shed a few pounds.

Baptist preachers have always known that beliefs matter. The challenge has been in convincing the congregations of the same. The pastor spends hours in study searching the Scriptures. He cross references verses.

An evangelist is not just an itinerate preacher, though it is true that many evangelists are itinerate preachers, the fact that you travel from place to place and speak in various churches and different civic settings does not necessarily make you an evangelist.

The Apostle Paul deals with the proclamation of the Word in 2 Timothy 4:2: “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” The word preach means “to herald or announce.”

Several years ago, a dear friend of mine passed away. My wife and I made arrangements to attend his funeral. My friend was a Christian. He attended a Baptist church, and the funeral was being held in what he considered a Gospel preaching church.

I am not absolutely sure that it is right to call any part of the sermon the most important. One could argue that the Bible is the most important part.
