In our periodic new member’s class, we teach our church’s purpose—loving God, growing together, and serving others. These are not just talking points, but destinations along the journey of the Christian life.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with a high-ranking government official. During the course of our conversation he said something that I will never forget.
Soulwinning Must Be Done in the Power of the Holy Spirit
I believe that every church should have organized soulwinning opportunities for its members to participate in. It is an excellent way to provide hands on training for new or inexperienced soul winners.
I love soulwinning! It is not something I feel I am good at, but I have learned that the more you go the more fruit you will have. I love the quote by Dr. Curtis Hutson, “The only alternative to soulwinning is disobedience to God.”
For many years pastors and mission boards have seen the wisdom of sending first term missionaries to the ministry of an established missionary who already has been working in that country.
The following is a soulwinning or preaching outline of ten key words found in the Roman's Road. Instead of going directly to Romans 3, let’s start with the “good news” of Romans 1.
An evangelist is not just an itinerate preacher, though it is true that many evangelists are itinerate preachers, the fact that you travel from place to place and speak in various churches and different civic settings does not necessarily make you an evangelist.
Several years ago, a dear friend of mine passed away. My wife and I made arrangements to attend his funeral. My friend was a Christian. He attended a Baptist church, and the funeral was being held in what he considered a Gospel preaching church.
An old missionary is nearing death. In a few hours he will be executed. He thinks very little about his own circumstances. He mentions that he is offering himself as a sacrifice to the Lord, “I am now ready to be offered….” He thinks about his future journey, “the time of my departure is at hand….”
I had just finished preaching four times to several hundred teenagers at a harvest rally in Norfolk, Virginia. The youth pastor drove me to the airport where I was to catch a plane to Baltimore, Maryland. I was scheduled on US Airways, Flight 4476, to Philadelphia and then . . .
It was a routine flight: traffic to the airport was great; security lines moved quickly; boarding went smoothly; departure and landing were right on schedule. The two and a half hour flight went by quickly as I had brought with me more than enough to keep me busy. As we prepared for landing, I put everything away, leaned back . . .
In life there is nothing more consistent than the passing of time. We attempt to slow it down and even at times make it stand still, but it is undeterred, steadily marching onward. Benjamin Franklin said, “Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time; for that’s the stuff life is made of.”
What begins in the pastor’s heart will be contagious if it is communicated and structured biblically. This is God’s design. He works through spiritual leaders to mobilize His people and accomplish His purpose.
1. Jesus is with you. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:20
The command to love one’s neighbor appears ten different times in the Scriptures. At Lancaster Baptist Church, we have set aside a special week to devote special attention to following these instructions.
Big days are a lot of things. They are exciting. It is always great to meet first time guests. No doubt about it, you cannot do the work that leads to a special day without expending . . .
