The Skeptical Teacher

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.

Teacher: It is physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it is a very large mammal its throat is very small.

Little girl: Jonah was swallowed by a whale.

The irritated teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.

Little girl: When I get to Heaven I will ask Jonah.

Teacher: What if Jonah went to hell?

Little girl: Then you ask him.

Teenage Logic

Nancy suppressed her shock at seeing her 17-year-old daughter’s new hairdo. The sides of her head were shaved, the rest of her hair was died burgundy, and the top was spiked. Nancy said, “That’s a bit different, isn’t it?” A friend saw the haircut and asked, “What does your mom think of it?” The daughter replied, “Oh, my mom’s pretty cool. She doesn’t mind at all.” The bewildered friend asked, “Then why did you do it?”

Keeping a Dress White

A young lady who was attempting to defend her attendance at questionable places of amusement told her friend that she thought a Christian could go anywhere. Her friend replied, “Certainly she can, but I am reminded of a little incident which happened last summer when I went with a party of friends to explore a coal mine. One of the young women appeared dressed in a dainty white gown. When her friends remonstrated with her, she appealed to the old miner who was to act as guide to the party. ’Can’t I wear a white dress down into the mine?’ she asked petulantly.

Purity Is a Choice

NBA player A. C. Green said that when he became a Christian he resolved to keep his purity. He said, “We all have the power of choice, but once used, our choice then has power over us. Condoms are hailed today as the answer for unwanted pregnancy and disease prevention, no one tells the kids they fail 15 to 36% of the time. Teen pregnancies have increased 87% since the government began it’s birth control crusade. We will never stop the AIDS epidemic until we stop promiscuity. Earvin was diagnosed with HIV in 1991 and most of the team went in for testing. I didn’t.”

The Way of Escape

The U.S. Air Force pilot Scott O’Grady was  shot down over Bosnia during the late 1990s. He evaded capture for days until he was found by rescue helicopters. When the helicopter landed to rescue him he summoned all of his strength and fought through bushes to get to the place of refuge.

God provides a way of escape during temptation. It may not be easy to take it, but He always provides one.

Skipping School

The story is told of four high school boys who couldn’t resist the temptation to skip morning classes. Each had been smitten with a bad case of spring fever. After lunch they showed up at school and reported to the teacher that their car had a flat tire. Much to their relief, she smiled and said, “Well, you missed a quiz this morning, so take your seats and get out a pencil and paper.” Still smiling, she waited as they settled down and got ready for her questions.

Then she said, “First question—which tire was flat?”

Jim Elliot’s Prayer

Jim Elliot was one of the martyred missionaries in 1956. He was a passionate Christian who journaled many of his thoughts and prayers. One such entry addressed his concern about impact. He wrote, “Father, make of me a crisis man. Bring those I contact to decision. Let me not be a milepost on a single road; make me a fork, that men must turn one way or another on facing Christ in me.” His impact continues on even though he died over fifty years ago at the age of twenty-nine.

The Testimony She Left Behind

Lauren McCain was one of the students killed at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007. The freshman from Shawnee, Oklahoma left a powerful statement about her faith on her personal web site. The 20-year-old had written, “The purpose and love of my life is Jesus Christ. I don’t have to argue religion, philosophy, or historical evidence because I KNOW Him.”

No Turning Back

I’m part of the fellowship of the unashamed. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I’m a disciple of Jesus Christ. I won’t look back, let up, slow down, back away or be still. My past is redeemed, my future is secure. I’m finished and done with low living, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheap living and dwarfed goals.
